This book doesn't offer a 10-step plan for a successful project management career because no plan can possibly address every project contingency. This book is a necessary guide for any coordinator of people and projects. You may be a planner, thinker, strategist, project manager, business owner, executive leader, business analyst, athletic coach, parent or simply an individual curious about ways to become more effective at work. Any way you slice it, you'll benefit from reading this book.
The Effective Project Manager explains in easy-to-understand terms what you need to do in order to become the best project manager you can be—an Effective Project Manager (EPM). The key themes of this book include time management, people management and thoughtful production of work that matters.
You need to be able to tell what work is the most important during any given hour spent on the job. You'll learn how to accomplish this task by better understanding people and organizations. You'll get people to tell you things by listening, planning and leading. You'll turn into a doer who can handle any situation thrown at you. You'll learn how to organize your thoughts and structure your planning process by using mind maps and pictures. You'll find out how to track progress easily and give your teams proven processes to use. Finally, you'll learn the common traits that all EPMs share.
The book is split into two parts. Part 1 focuses on how to manage yourself and includes tools that will help you become more effective in both your professional and personal life. Part 2 focuses on how to manage others. If you can manage yourself and manage others effectively, then you can lead almost any project.

Review
"Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book." - Projectmanagement.com
From the Author
The intent behind this book is to provide insights into key personality traits as well as hard skills that are required in order to be a Effective Project Manager. If you are not focused on doing the right things at the right times you will spin your wheels and find yourself stuck on the side of the road. I am a cultural anthropologist, wordsmith, organizational psychologist, investigator and visual architect working in a project management role. This combination of skills and interests in addition to utilization of hard-nosed project management tactics allows me to offer valuable insights that are not always at the forefront of an executive's mind but should be.

Excellent book which should be a part of every Project Manager's collection
By Jeremy L. Graybill
I really enjoyed this book. In my experience, Project Managers can sometimes be a dime a dozen. It's the truly effective ones that stand out, and are the diamonds in the rough. The author gets right to the heart of what makes a Project Manager an Effective Project Manager (EPM).
There are so many points and lessons made throughout this book that I thought were valuable and applicable daily, both in a Project Manager's career, as well as in their personal life. Here are some very brief highlights and snippets from the book:
"Having a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) may help you land a job, but it won’t guarantee you’ll be effective at your job...Life isn’t a 10-step process, and you shouldn’t run your projects as a 10-step process either."
The book begins by looking at Mind Maps. This was something new to me, and I really enjoyed the concept, the examples, and the application. The Mind Map chapter provided excellent examples on using Mind Maps real time, and the author provides great supporting tools and templates for free on his website.
There was also valuable information on limiting the quantity and duration of unimportant meetings, and unimportant tasks and work. The author focuses on simplifying and eliminating, so you can be more effective.
Moving on, the book is filled with specific examples of what to do, and what not to do, in various situations. This includes the work you're performing, along with working with others. Personally, I enjoyed the section "Learn to Chit Chat," because this is a big weakness of mine. I'm often so focused on the tasks at hand, that I don't take the time to engage in crucial chit chat.
I really enjoyed the quotes throughout the book as well; they were valuable and very relevant.
Bottom line, I think this is an excellent book, and one that would be worth going back to again and again to remember what to focus on.
-Jeremy L. Graybill, PMP (and hopefully an EPM)

... well for both new and experienced Project Managers Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book

Works well for both new and experienced Project Managers
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I found the writing style made for an easy and entertaining read. The book through a down-to-earth, engaging tone made absorption much easier for me.
I have been in IT for a long time and slogged my way through a number of projects. All too often, we fall into being overly consumed with the technology issues and fall down on managing the project. Being time-crunched, we manage the next project like we did the last one. The book introduces some new project management tools such as Mind Maps and reinforces the old concepts that we know are important but unfortunately let slide. The succinct length of the book makes it a great fit for a quick read before starting your first project or your next project.
I heartily recommend The Effective Project Manager.

Required reading for PM's
By Michael J. Garner
I found this to be a quick and easy read for anyone tasked with managing a group to a desired outcome. The conversational tone eases the absorption of all the useful tips, example mind maps, and practical insight into managing a project and team and the author wise steers the reader around the traditional and time consuming tools like MS Project to more effective tools and methods. Understanding stakeholders, different personalities and the required communication techniques, meeting and email strategies - all good stuff and I think relevant to anyone in a managing role, not just project managers. Not being yet another 10-step book or PMP focused book on PM theory is a good thing! This is a great orientation for the new PM and the experienced PM will find useful tips as well.
