This review is based on the kindle version of this book.....
This book had ten 5-star reviews before I bought it. What I just noticed was that none of those 10 reviews were labeled as "verified purchased". This book doesn't seem to have been proof read, or had any sort of editing before being publish. There are grammar errors, bad coding practices, and by chapter 5 the whole project you build up to that point completely falls apart.

The screenshots in the book for the game at the end of chapter 5 looked nothing like what I had so I downloaded the source code from the publishers website and guess what! The screenshots in the book don't match the code by the author either!

This book was clearly rushed and I feel as if I wasted my money on it.

Clear Step-by-Step introduction to 2D sprite programming on iOS

First off, I received an early review copy of the book from Packt. I typically use Packt 'by example' titles to get some practice with new technology. The main quality of this book is that it includes a clear progression of knowledge and skills from introductory Sprite Kit basics to the more advanced example apps. The book can easily serve as a general introduction to 2D sprite programming as well as a practical guide to making your own games on iOS. The code examples are easy enough to follow but as with all developer books, the code might need some tweaking based on your version of Xcode and your machine. I attached a picture of the final app working on my computer as proof that the code works

Although the book provides a chapter on iOS 9 compatibility, I could knock off 1/2 a star because I felt it could do more throughout the book on Swift 2 compatibility and the new features coming in Swift 2. However, it does a great job on introducing basic 2D Sprite programming concepts and combining said topics into a working app.

Graceful Entry to SpriteKit (An efficient roadmap of SpriteKit Framework)

Few days before the release I was provided with reviewer copy by Packt Publishing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, because of its concise manner of guiding through SpriteKit’s components, and diligently revealing their dependencies and interactions with structured approach. The book’s clear and uncluttered presentation helped me to develop strong mental map of Sprite Kit’s internal hierarchy.
Coming from OpenGL background, book helped me understand the peculiarities of Sprite-based rendering. The book is invaluable tool for quick familiarization with SpriteKit, Swift and Xcode’s GUI. The book uncovers the framework by creating the example game, but instead of simple “repeat this” instructions, every major concept gets succinct introduction and frequent infographics.
If you need a guide to break into SpriteKit, and develop a solid understanding of SpriteKit framework and Swift, this book fulfills these tasks gracefully.
