Joe Kertzman has authored 12 editions of the Knives annual book, as well as the Art of the Knife, BLADE's Guide to Making Knives and four editions of Sporting Knives. Joe is also Managing Editor of BLADE Magazine.

If you're just starting out this is NOT the best option.

Although this book does have allot of good info, several sections of this book are full of pretty pictures without much application to the average home knife builder.
I'll start with the less useful info in the book.
The first chapter leads off with a guy using an EDM machine(electric discharge machining) to begin making his knives, as the process goes on he uses a milling machine to do some of the other work, since I doubt anyone other than the most dedicated knife makers are going to have, or plan to ever purchase, that sort of equipment, it would have been better to see how to do these steps using more common tools and equipment. They were great looking knives but not much info a person could actually apply even in a well equipped home workshop.
The third section makes no sense to me why it was even included, other than maybe to show how production shops used to make knives back in the 80's, it involves using a pantograph machine and making patterns for it. Since pantographs are used to make multiple copies of the same parts, and are obsolete(not very good if you are going into production these days), this really is of no use to a person actually trying to build their own knives.
Another section in the book is about creating steel from raw materials and smelting. Although very interesting, once again not allot of application for the knife builder or anyone else who is not already very experienced in knife making.
This book does have some good sections on basic knife design as well as some good info on casting guards and pommels, overall, I'd say about 1/2 to 2/3 of this book is actually useful.
Even though this book has better pictures, for a person just starting out I would recommend getting this instead How to Make Knives

Better books available

The pictures are B & W, and aren't even particularly good B & W. David Boye's book is better and more detailed, as are several others. I know Loveless is a legend as a knife maker, but that doesn't have any impact on his written work. OK to buy as a historical document but there are better first books if you want to learn to be a knife maker.

There are plenty of books for beginners, but this is not one. There are not a lot of great books for more obscure and advanced methods, but this is one.

To my knowledge there are no other books on using a pantograph for knife making.

Take it for what it's worth.

About the Author
Mike van der Vijver is a consultant, trainer and facilitator, working with people and processes. He has over 20 years’ experience in the meeting industry, initially as conference interpreter and subsequently as meeting designer through MindMeeting, the company he co-founded. In addition, he is an executive consultant and coach on national and organisational culture with Itim International. Mike regularly provides content at international conferences. He lives both in Italy and the Netherlands. Eric de Groot is one of the first Meeting Designers. His pioneering work started in 1992; now he caters to the national (Dutch) market in De Wet van Thomas and internationally in MindMeeting. Thanks to his background in drama he takes a broad, human perspective to meetings and meeting processes. Eric regularly conducts workshops and learning sessions for professionals in the meeting industry as well as in other educational contexts. He lives in the Netherlands.

Incredibly important reading for all in the meeting industry!

I've not finished the book yet (as I received it two days ago) but can already state that this is the most important offering for meeting planners in years. More than an instructional work on meeting logistics, this builds on the 2007 book Meeting Architecture - A Manifesto to demonstrate both the need and the techniques of implementing the philosophy of that book. If you have been in the planning field for decades (as I have) you will learn as much from this book as a newcomer to the field - the content is that revolutionary. Those who work in venues will likewise gain insight into the direction in which meeting planning must head. A must read.

How to keep meetings on task, funny and enjoyable book.

The great economist Thomas Sowell once said “people who enjoy meetings shouldn’t be in charge of anything,” and I tend to agree. When you go into the average meeting, people end up discussing every inane nuance of what paper to put in the printer, while you’re barely willing to give it five minutes. This book shows you how to structure a meeting, so that you don’t waste time or annoy the members present.

There’s a wonderful chapter here on international meetings, where you have different attitudes on what to expect. The authors tell me something I never thought of; Italians will not stop just because their time is up. They will keep on going, and tempters will flair. To Scandinavians, however, this is grossly unacceptable. Another example of a culture clash is a meeting where the mayor is late, then calls to say she’ll be later, then calls to say she probably won’t make it. This might not seem like problem; after all, just start anyway, and the mayor can speak at the end. The problem is that in some countries, they can’t start until they get a “greeting from the authorities.” In Korea and Japan, showing up late is not acceptable at all. It’s the equivalent of picking your nose in public.

The authors give advice on how to arrange the seats, the tables, and the schedule. Some meetings do well as round table discussions, and others, especially when you have visual presentations, need a long table where everyone can see ahead. Then we get to the role of the host (or facilitator) who’s in charge of making sure everyone has their turn to speak. You don’t want a meeting turning into a free-for-all or a shouting match, especially when you’re on a deadline.

The funniest thing in this book was in the chapter on international meetings. A conference goes overtime, and everything’s late, but Italian attendants all walk out when it’s time for their free pasta lunch. You can waste time, cheat, and be rude in Italy, but the mealtimes are sacrosanct!
This book is more than a guide to structuring a meeting. It’s a funny book on the way different peoples communicate.

A must read if you are a meeting planner and want to be taken seriously

After having worked for many years successfully designing meetings (something which few people can claim), Mike and Eric have been kind enough to share with the rest of us all their knowledge and experience. This book will not only open your mind as to what really matters in a meeting (its content) but it will also give you practical tools and tons of actionable ideas to start putting it into practice. I'm fortunate enough to be working right now on my first meeting design assignment for a client and can't put this book down!
But to me, the highlight of the book is how Eric and Mike conceive meetings: not as a means for people to meet, but as a tool to solve a business challenge. As I kept reading the book, I realized how unconventional and remarkable is their approach: to me, they are almost like psychologists or doctors, who with their work diagnose a company's problem or illness and then design a meeting to cure it! So I encourage all meeting planners to read this book and change the way they conceive meetings. I believe it is a much more meaningful and interesting job!!

These “homonationalisms” are deployed to distinguish upright “properly hetero,” and now “properly homo,” U.S. patriots from perversely sexualized and racialized terrorist look-a-likes—especially Sikhs, Muslims, and Arabs—who are cordoned off for detention and deportation.

Puar combines transnational feminist and queer theory, Foucauldian biopolitics, Deleuzian philosophy, and technoscience criticism, and draws from an extraordinary range of sources, including governmental texts, legal decisions, films, television, ethnographic data, queer media, and activist organizing materials and manifestos. Looking at various cultural events and phenomena, she highlights troublesome links between terrorism and sexuality: in feminist and queer responses to the Abu Ghraib photographs, in the triumphal responses to the Supreme Court’s Lawrence decision repealing anti-sodomy laws, in the measures Sikh Americans and South Asian diasporic queers take to avoid being profiled as terrorists, and in what Puar argues is a growing Islamophobia within global queer organizing.
