Short, but very interesting reading

Here is the story of mankind's first, and unsuccessful, attempt to colonize another planet.

A dozen slow, multi-generation ships were sent to a distant star system called the Leffer System. Soon afterwards, mankind developed a star drive, so that by the time the ships reached their destination, mankind had been traveling around the galaxy for a hundred years. Of the dozen ships, two arrived empty, and two others never arrived at all. The ships were simply parked in orbit, and abandoned. Beta-2, one of the ships, even has its own ballad. Years later, as a college assignment, Joneny, a young researcher, is sent to find out just what happened.

Several of the supposedly indestructible ships show evidence of huge internal explosions. Some old audio recordings talk of being attacked by some sort of green humanoid that communicates by telepathy. Joneny meets the humanoid's half-human son, who is able to exist slightly outside of time, and live in hard vaccuum with no problem at all. He watches video from the other ships where the inhabitants have physically, and mentally, de-evolved to the level of an early human. "The Norm" is taken very seriously on the ships. If a person was found to be outside physical norms in any way, whether it's being too tall, or left-handed, or having the "wrong" eye color, they were immediately executed. By the end, Joneny understands just what The Ballad of Beta-2 is all about.

This is a short novel, but a very good one. It's an interesting story about how things on a multi-generation ship can go very wrong, and it's worth reading.

Hard to find but worth hunting down.

I was looking for The Ballad of Beta-2 and Empire Star, a two-in-one Delany title that does not seem to be on amazon. I agree with the other reviewer: Ballad of Beta-2 is a quick and interesting mystery, highly recommended. The other tale that it is bound with, in my copy, Empire Star, is more complex (and not as haunting), but still a rewarding bit of short Delany SF. Delany can be very bizarre (as in Dhalgren) but he can also write good old-fashioned SF. !

An old friend, revisited

I read Delany's books when they first came out in the late 60's, and have always remembered "The Ballad of Beta 2" as one of my favorites. It must have really resonated with me, as even today I can hear the song that's central to the plot in my head. I reread this just a few months ago and I recaptured that sense of wonder I had as a teenager. That's the sign of a keeper as far as books go.

Heavenly Nudes in Color

Artistic nudes are done in black and white much more often than in color. Rarely are color nudes very artistic. Uwe Ommer's nudes are an exception. He has established himself as one of the world's finest photographers of the nude in color. Only Japanese photo books (hard to find outside of Japan) feature color nudes equal to or better than Uwe Ommer's nudes.
Uwe Ommer is a master of lighting. His rather unique lighting style adds to the romantic mystique of the settings of the photos in this book. The colors are often rich, deep, and saturated, and yet the skin tones are beautiful.
The images are at the same time highly erotic and very tasteful. Interestingly enough they are less explicit than even Playboy magazine, but at the same time many times more erotic than magazines that show images much more explicit than Playboy. Though very erotic, the women are photographed in a way that is definitely not exploitive. Even many women will approve of the images.
The models are extreamly attractive women posed in beautiful romantic settings that display a definite Oriental motif.
If you are bored with the typical color nudes you're bombarded with in the mass media, you will probably enjoy this book.
If you appriciate the beauty of Asian women you will definitely absolutely love this book.

Beautiful models

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous.

It's a beautifully printed coffee-table book. Each page reprodcues one photo, at a scale large enough for lots of detail to come through. No text, just a beautiful young woman. Ommer presents a variety of faces and figures, many in settings that just emphasize the young woman's charm. The collection represents much of the variety in East Asian beauty, and gives good representation to the slim, elegant bust so distinctive to this population.

As much as I like these photos, I found two things to wish for. First is that Ommer could have represented more of Asia in this collection - India is Asia, and is home to a half-billion samples of feminine beauty, none of which appeared here. Second was the way poses tended towards a sameness. They invariably captured the face, and usually the bust and torso. The whole woman has hips and legs, too, that complete the graceful curve of a female figure. These were under-represented by the 3/4 length portrait format that Ommer favors. And, a minor point, lack of titles and even page numbers makes it hard to discuss specific images.

It's a lovely collection, and a complement to other collections that favor European features and figures. It could have been more, though.

It also examines silicon nanowire (SiNW) as a new candidate for achieving the downscaling of devices. The text describes the modeling and fabrication of SiNW, including a new top-down fabrication technique. Strained technology, which changes the properties of device materials rather than changing the device geometry, is also discussed.

The book ends with a look at the technical and economic challenges that face the commercialization of nanoelectronics and what universities, industries, and government can do to lower the barriers. A useful resource for professionals, researchers, and scientists, this work brings together state-of-the-art technical and scientific information on important topics in advanced nanoelectronics.

About the Author

Dr. Razali Ismail is currently a professor and head of the Computational Nanoelectronics Research Group at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He has worked for more than 20 years in the field of modeling and simulation of microelectronics devices and has published various articles on the subject. His current research interest is in the emerging area of nanoelectronics devices, focusing on the use of carbon-based materials and novel device structure. Dr. Razali is a member of the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS).

Dr. Mohammad Taghi Ahmadi is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is active in research related to carbon-based devices and graphene-based transistor and sensor modeling. His main research interests are in nanoscale device modeling, simulation, and characterization. His research has resulted in a number of publications in high-impact journals, for which he has been several awards, including a UTM Chancellor Award (2010). Dr. Ahmadi is an IEEE and American Nano Society member.

Dr. Sohail Anwar is an associate professor of engineering at the Altoona College of The Pennsylvania State University. He is also a professional associate of the Management Development Programs and Services at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park. Dr. Anwar is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of ASEE and PAS. He recently served on the IEEE Committee on Technology Accreditation Activities (CTAA). He is a commissioner of the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET.
