A Great Bible for Syndication

Having a talk show is very rewarding, however, wanting to expand my listening population, I looked into syndication. I read many articles and books on the subject but they only give you bits and pieces of information. Being a newcomer to syndication, I wanted to know the pluses but also the pitfalls. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across "Syndication Nation" by Chris Witting. It not only answered all my questions but gave me a great deal of additional information. For me the most important chapter was 12, "Six Steps to Success." This is a must read for anyone wanting to syndicate their radio show. Chris continues in different chapters to cover newspaper, television, and Internet syndication. Don't pass up this valuable book.

a book for beginners that is devoid of decent content

Sadly this book seems to spend more time convincing the reader that they should become a syndicator of product and doesn't go into much detail as to how to do this. The sorts of details I was looking for does not exist in this so called "definitive guide".

This book really is for beginners and as a host of a syndicated radio show this gives me no insight into other markets or ways of doing things.
Very disappointed.

Save your money for mailers.

This book is thin on anything useful and is a sly promotional gimmick for the authors' business, which he promotes whenever he can. Good books on the syndication industry are very hard to find. That being said, skip this book and look for one that will actually help you, not the authors business.

About the Author
Kevin D. Johnson, president of Johnson Media Inc. and a serial entrepreneur, has several years of experience leading his multimillion-dollar marketing and communications company that now serves many of the most notable Fortune 100 businesses. As an innovative leader, he has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, CBS, Oprah Radio, and in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Moreover, he has appeared on CNN frequently.

Before founding his company in 2000, he engineered web applications and produced computer software for leading companies. He was a software programmer for IBM and a webmaster for CNN Interactive. He also worked for Arthur Andersen Worldwide as a business consultant and software developer.

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Kevin attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied computer science as a NASA scholar and Spanish, graduating with honors. While in college, he started Johnson Media Inc., which in 2000 created one of the first online content management systems, called OmniPublisher. He later sold it to a publishing company, earning the distinction as a social media pioneer. Realizing the tremendous opportunity in applying Internet technologies to media and marketing, he decided to focus his business on this growing market.

Recently, Kevin was the director of economic gardening for the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), one of the nation’s largest nonprofit trade organizations for technology. In this role, he was responsible for leading an innovative approach to economic development that focused on providing resources to high-tech businesses located in Georgia’s coastal region.

In his spare time, Kevin enjoys listening to salsa and jazz, playing piano in his Latin band, reading, golfing, traveling, and running half marathons. He is a member of the Apex Society, the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), and a former board member of the Atlanta Business League (ABL). He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife and son.

Author is too self-absorbed.

I have read hundreds, if not over one thousand business and self-help books; never seen an author so focused solely on himself and his accomplishments. I have read books by Trump where he is pompous, but one could easily argue Trump has fully earned it. I understand an author needs to build credibility with his/her audience, but an author must build credibility with facts and less about opinions. Directly comparing one of his college start-ups to Facebook, friends think I am a genius because I scored so high on the SAT, brilliant programmers like us, etc. Visited Harvard Business School, but just not for him, his time is just too valuable to waste on an MBA at Harvard. The self promotion was so great, it made it difficult to understand his points he was trying to convey. The author is convinced every business he ever started became best in class. I found the content to be informative and I liked how each chapter was a short factoid. Repeated same facts over and over too much as if each chapter was its own separate publication, we learned ten times that he attended Morehouse College. Many of the points were very valid, but author needs to find better ways to convey points than always his own experiences blown up with grandiose adjectives.

268 pages of the author stroking his own ego...

I can't believe this has maintained a 5 star rating, because I honestly found it quite difficult to get through the whole thing. I'm glad I read it though, because it showed me the kind of person and entrepreneur I do NOT want to become.

Kevin Johnson uses every page of this book to stroke his own overinflated ego, even saying at one point during his chapter on the necessity of being crazy that "maybe I am crazy - crazy rich, that is..." He talks about his soirees with Kanye West and President Obama and millionaire doctors on a private 18-hole golf course. This is all great and I understand that he's trying to show and illustrate what the entrepreneurial spirit can bring you, but for the love of god...the whole book was that kind of s***!

One particular chapter stands out to me as exhibit A to prove my point: In his chapter on spending time with people smarter than yourself, he starts with "The average person is intimidated by smart people. I know firsthand..." You might expect him to immediately go on to say he's spent time with people who humbled him in some form or fashion, but no, the next sentence is "whenever people find out what I scored on an SAT exam, they are shocked. Some try to stump me on the spot with a complex riddle or math question. Others just look at me in disbelief or with gut-wrenching jealousy. I can sense their fear of being judged." So yeah, he was referring to HIMSELF as the one people are intimidated by.

Throughout the book, he constantly compares himself to both Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs. Quote: "As I watched my life play out on the big screen in the movie 'The Social Network,' I smiled, reminiscing about my college days when I, too, was an instant campus superstar like Mark Zuckerberg, cofounder of Facebook....Naturally, with my newfound fame came the groupies, the women who didn't necessarily have an interest in me as much as my ability to rub elbows with moguls like P. Diddy and Kanye West."

I can't necessarily say I regret reading the book, because some of the 100 points are actually useful - but I would have preferred to read it in a blog format with merely the list of 100 points, the quotes he adds underneath each chapter heading and that's it. I could do without Kevin Johnson's comments on how great he is and how everyone should aspire to be just like him. I find it ironic that he includes a chapter on entrepreneurs being humble (i.e. Mark Zuckerberg living a normal life despite being a billionaire), because he needs a dose of his own medicine.

Also amazed how it has such high ratings - overall generic advice, repetition of stories, tailored for younger vs. experienced audience. Minimal substance. Would not recommend.

Good book - would recommend

A summarised version of tips and tricks to use in interviews.
I don't usually like long reads and self help books but this one is short and to the point. It focuses on a lot of what I found myself doing wrong in interviews and how to improve them and focus on your strengths.
The book had some formatting issues on my kindle and I had to reduce my font size to a minimum to see all the tables.

Overall though a good guide to have and it actually helped me to get the role I wanted!

I read this book twice before interviewing for a Project Coordinator role. Sandra has great tips and sample questions in helping people prepare for all situations and questions during interviews. I felt much more relaxed going into my interview and ended up being offered the role straight away! I was required to purchase this book for a class that completes my minor in gerontology. I did use the book and it is straight to the point. It does include case studies and mental health exams that a geriatric psych nurse would need on a daily basis. It contains up to date information and even has a section on ethnic diversity. (What class doesn't these days?) It has useful tools for professional nursing in the Appendix section. If this book is suggested, but not required...I would still get it. It will stay in my library after I have completed the class.

Culture of Animal Cells: A Manual of Basic Technique and Specialized Application, 6th Ed has been very well received by the scientific community, as have many of your other titles. What do you think sets your books apart and makes them so successful compared to other titles in the field?
I would say there are three major components: (1) The books are designed as practical guides with detailed single-step instructions which should be sufficient without further recourse to the literature. (2) The preparation and sources of materials are explained in detail. (3) Most of the basic protocols are illustrated with easy-to-follow diagrams.

What challenges did you face while putting together Culture of Animal Cells: A Manual of Basic Technique and Specialized Applications, 6th Edition?
I struggled with the need to update but at the same time preserve basic procedures which have not changed markedly from the previous edition. This, of course, led to the dilemma of deciding what to retain and what to leave out. I also thought long and hard about what specialized protocols to add without compromising the basic technique role of the book.

What do you find rewarding about authoring and editing books in the sciences?
It forces me to keep up-to-date with developments in cell culture, and in turn helps me to be a better teacher of cell culture. I also get satisfaction from converting what are sometimes complex instructions into one simple straightforward procedure.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I was invited to prepare a textbook on cell culture for a college course. Previously, I had used John Paul’s book, Cell and Tissue Culture, and knew it needed to be updated.

What advice would you offer to scientists writing or editing their first book?
- Determine the precise niche that you wish to fill.
- Plan the structure carefully beforehand but do not be afraid to deviate, within reason, to meet new demands.
- Ensure the text is well illustrated with tables and diagrams.
- Make sure the book is properly cross-referenced.
- Prepare the index yourself. Even if it is to be professionally indexed you will find terms that the indexer does not.

How would you compare the experiences of writing a book and writing a journal article?
Both require a clear concise style, but the author has more freedom to express ideas and opinions when writing a book. Another major difference is that a scientific paper must address a specific topic and provide proof to substantiate the conclusions that are drawn, while a book draws on the author’s and other scientists’ experience to provide a more general review and specific guidelines or instructions.

Do you find that the role of books in the scientific research community has changed over the years? Are they valued more or less today than they were 10-20 years ago?
Rapid changes in technology mean that some books will become outdated without regular updates, which are not always feasible in printed copy. Yet, while there is an increasing tendency to provide instructions and protocols online, many people will still find reassurance from using a textbook with an established reputation.

How do you envision the evolution of science writing over the next 5-10 years?
Certain journals will still tend to be regarded as more reliable than others, as indicated by their citation indices. However, the number of free public access journals will probably increase, presumably with payment to submit articles. There will be a continuing need for editorial control of journal content due to the proliferation of unedited, non-reviewed material appearing online.

What do you feel has been the most significant scientific discovery that has been made during your lifetime?
I can really only speak for biology where the elaboration of the genetic code is probably the most significant development. The ability to regulate gene expression and the resultant plasticity of the cell phenotype will create major opportunities in cell culture and its relevance to tissue in vivo.

Not meant for students

This book absolutely contains a wealth of knowledge. However, it is written with the assumption that the reader is already very familiar with many tissue culture and bio-lab terms and concepts. Terms are used without being defined, and many of the technical terms are not located in the glossary. The book is written more in the format of a formal scientific paper. Information is provided, but not necessarily explained. I have no doubt that this book would be a good reference for a laboratory professional who wants to transition to cell culture from a similar field. If you are a student like me, chances are good your current education is not sufficient to appreciate the full value of this text, but instead find it frusturating and painful to read.

The text gives insights to help troubleshoot any difficulties encountered. It was worth the purchase. Here's an exceptional rarity: a large, sweeping art history text book so well-done it almost makes the reader wish she or he were back in school. It's rather amazing that it took so long for a book like Art Since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism, and Postmodernism to exist: a balanced, seven hundred page historical tome written with multiple perspectives in mind. As any undergrad knows, H.W. Janson's ubiquitous History of Art was written as if art history were some sort of race to colonize ideas and imagery; you'll likely not miss Janson's fetish for pointing out who did what first. Penned by a nimble crew who all teach at Ivy League universities, Art Since 1900, which mirrors the development of psychoanalysis and the creation of a huge international art scene, is on a smaller scale a history of contemporary theory and the art world almost as much as it is the art itself. Attention is paid throughout to important exhibits and texts, pointing out the rippling effect throughout the art community of these mirrors and portals. The book is arranged so that there are one or two essays per year. In such a novel format, often undervalued movements are given as much respect as Cubism and Minimalism. There are entire chapters here on Fluxus, feminist art, the Assemblage movement, Lettrism, the Independent Group, Gutai, Kineticism, the Harlem Renaissance, Aktionism, earthworks, video art, and the aesthetics of ACT UP. As with any history, there are personalities whose works are emphasized over that of others; the scant attention given to Jean-Michel Basquiat, for instance, is a rather large question mark. This history, coming soon to a college survey class near you, is like the period of art it covers: as often obscure and frustrating as it is dazzling and insightful. The authors, four prominent art history professors, offer a work that is beyond reproach with regard to thoroughness and accuracy but, despite the rich pageant of ideas on parade, they rarely illuminate their subject with even the faintest spark of excitement. Art is presented as a series of problems (the problem of figuration, the problem of post-colonialism, the problem of history), as if the ideas behind art were interchangeable with art itself. Painter Paul Gauguin, for example, is dissected solely in terms of his ill-conceived notions of the primitive purity of non-Western cultures, which is a bit like judging a fine meal only by its cholesterol content. The book's rigorously academic prose often sounds like a debate the reader has happened into the middle of: e.g., "Any attempt to transform autonomy into a transhistorical, if not ontological precondition of aesthetic experience, however, is profoundly problematic." Despite these defects, the volume manages to be fast moving thanks to its snappy format-107 short chapters, each broken up by subheadings, illustrations and sidebars-and it cannot fail to impress through the sheer vigor and profusion of the ideas on display, from Cubism to Chris Burden. Indeed, the book is a kind of intellectual tilt-a-whirl, with no comforting H.W. Janson-style master narrative at its center. The authors leave their own authority in deconstructed shards in the first paragraph of the introduction, which invites readers to arrange the book's "puzzle pieces" according to individual need. It may be a lively ride to those already familiar with its terms, but to the uninitiated, this book will likely remain a series of broken conversations.

Art Since 1900 probably shouldn't be read by artists, younger ones at least. Here is where all your sincerity, all your peer support, all your sudden joy in thinking you've finally got it right this time, goes to die, splattered like meaningless bracken against the wall of Context, of History. Probably what's enraged so many people so much about this book is that its authors, scholars of 20th century art if there ever were any, aren't in the least afraid to make judgements, to call a bad idea a bad idea, to explore the limits of an artwork's relevance to the question: can art still matter? The criticisms of the book all seem to want to posit some grand democracy of artistic endeavor, or better still an anarchy, all the while ignoring the fact that we've already gone past the point of anarchy and moved into pure spectacle, which can only exist within the disavowal of history, and of judgement. Utopia's already here, but this book wants to mean more than that. Ultimately its message seems to be, simply: not making crap takes hard work. Read it and suffer.
