Very helpful and carefully thought out

I love this book!! The information is very well written and laid out in an easy to understand format. Makes cooking fun even if you don't like to cook! The book is full of large, beautiful photos and the authors love of her dog shines throughout the book. If you truly want the BEST possible diet for your beloved furchild, then this book is a must have. I bought my copy directly from the author at a recent Pet expo :)

a great guide!

I was very excited about this book as I home cook for both my dogs and we primarily go to a Chinese Medicine vet. The recipes are great however I am not so comfortable cooking beef hearts or liver, but I am may just try - all for the health of my dog who was saved by a Chinese Medicine Vet when he had chronic vomiting and seizures.

We all spend so much time trying to stay healthy yet we tend to forget about our furry friends. With the news full of dog food recalls, home cooking seems to be the only way to monitor what our fur kids are consuming. The upper-middle-class women in The Youngest Doll, mostly married to macho men, rebel against their doll-like existence or retreat into fantasy, those without money or the right skin color are even more oppressed. In terms of power and influence, these women stand in the same relation to men as Puerto Rico itself does to the United States, and Ferr� stretches artistic boundaries in writing about their situation. The stories, moving from the realistic to the nightmarish, are deeply, felt, full of irony and black humor, often experimental in form. The imagery is striking: an architect dreams about a beautiful bridge that “would open and close its arches like alligators making love”; a Mercedes Benz “shines in the dark like a chromium rhinoceros.” One story, “The Sleeping Beauty,” is a collage of letters, announcements, and photo captions that allows chilling conclusions to be drawn from what is not written. The collection includes Ferr�’s discussion of “When Women Love Men,” a story about a prostitute and a society lady who unite in order to survive, and one that illustrates the woman writer’s “art of dissembling anger through irony.” In closing, she considers how her experience as a Latin American woman with ties to the United States has brought to her writing a dual cultural perspective.

I loved this story

I read this story in Spanish while in college, and I absolutely loved it. I believe there is a great deal of symbolism and everything is not what it seems. I think it's a strong commentary on Puerto Rican culture. (How a woman with a slight imperfection is destined to be alone; How the doctor only married the girl because of her status and displayed her, etc.) Maybe I read more into it than the author intended but it's one of my favorite stories.

Gorgeous Writing and Imagery

This collection of short stories is so well-written that it's hard to believe it's a translation and that it wasn't crafted in English originally. The stories in this collection explore the lives of women who cannot escape the ever-present image of the doll. Young girls should play with dolls; women should look like dolls. But in these stories about life in Puerto Rico, women aren't content to just sit there and be dolls--that's where conflict and themes of gender inequality come in. These stories are as gorgeous as they are insightful. A master-class in short fiction.

So good!

If you like writers like Horacio Quiroga, you would love this book. The writer is a Puertorican woman who grew up in the 50's on the island in a wealthy family but has a different point of view on the life of the rich and the proo in Puerto Rico being overtaken by the americans who conquered and started establishing themselves on the island. Full of puerrican culture embeded in the stories it is definately a read for all of you who really want to get in touch with some heritage and be interested by a bit of weirdness.

The characters need to be fleshed out. A few grammatical errors, but not too distracting. However, the story line is good and I will read the next one to give the author a chance to make the characters come more to life. For me, the Dwarf King seems the most real of the characters. The others, for the most part are still fairly one dimensional.

This is a dictionary of terms you may see on the 79. Exam "Facts" is a bit of a stretch.. if you want a hardcopy of a 79 dictionary, you should buy this. There are no questions, just definitions - all of which could be found on investopedia.

Awesome!

I've finally received this book and it was well worth waiting for. The recipes are healthy and tasty and this home made chocolate makes huge impression on guests. Highly recommended!

I didn't even know you could make healthy chocolate

This cookbook looks fantastic! I have not been able to actually make any of the recipes yet, so will update this once we have, but the actual recipes look really good, and the pictures are really nice. I purchased this because we are moving slowly to a raw vegan diet, at least for the time being, to eradicate some health issues and for permanent weight loss. My husband is begrudgingly going along with this, and one of his biggest issues with it was that he would not be able to eat chocolate. This has solved that problem, because from others I know, this type of chocolate is both healthy to consume (and actually good for you) and supposedly tastes even better than regular chocolate. We'll see... He looked through it and is drooling over some of the pictures and is eager and anxious for me to get going with some of the recipes! :)

You need to be aware though, that this requires LOTS of unusual ingredients, which are not readily available, so be prepared to spend some money initially, stocking up on them (most likely sourced online). Also, it is quite annoying to read some of the author's notes because she is clearly from a part of England where they add an "r" to many words that don't actually have one. For example, she talks about agave nectar as a sweetener, and states that it is pronounced "agar-vay", which is nonsense. The word is pronounced "aga-vay", and only those who add "r" where it doesn't belong would pronounce it the other way. She says that xylitol is pronounced "zy-ler-tol", but again...incorrect. I feel that an editor should have caught this and corrected it, because for the rest of the world who don't add the "r" in to words where it doesn't exist, this could be confusing - especially for people who are unfamiliar with these ingredients. They will then mispronounce them, possibly embarrassing themselves in front of someone else who knows how to correctly pronounce the word. I realize that this is a small point, but those sorts of things annoy me in books, so I figured I'd point it out.
I will try to remember to update once we make some of these, but if I don't, assume that they are delicious if I have not changed the review to reflect otherwise...
Update - I have made some of the recipes in this book and so far they have all been fab! We've enjoyed everything in it and love that it is really healthy too!

A delightful book

This is a beautifully presented book with lovely illustrations and clear recipe instructions. I am gradually working my way through the recipes and was delighted with the birthday cake, which was much admired and enjoyed!

Its well worth making the effort to obtain the ingredients as the results are terrific. The desserts are all healthy and nutritious as well as tasting good.

The cake and biscuits could be kept in the fridge for several days, which is great.

Non-vegan friends have also appreciated my efforts so a winner all round!
