Flawed but worthwhile

Overall, a worthwhile primer on BPM but this book also has some serious flaws. When you see a title such as “Ultimate Guide”, you would think no other materials would be necessary – this isn't true with this work. Here’s my overall review in PIN (Positive/Interesting/Needs Improvement) form:

Positive:
• It’s not about the technology. A realistic perspective on the challenges of implementing BPM from an organizational perspective.
• Provides organizational change recommendations for supporting a BPM initiative.
• The “pitfalls to avoid” is worth reading through several times.

Interesting:
• The book does not delve into the evolution of specific frameworks and practices. For example, readers of Michael Porter’s “Competitive Advantage” will immediately recognize it as the source for the organizational value chain (Figure 12). Those with a software engineering background will recognize CMMI as the basis for BPMM. Neither Porter nor SEI are cited in this work; perhaps this isn't necessary because intermediate derivations of the originals are cited, but I found this interesting.

Needs Improvement:
• This book would be better if more example artifacts were presented. It references a website associated with the book, where I had hoped to find such examples, perhaps an errata, and links to some of the source material mentioned in the book. It’s not there - the website is basically advertisement for the book, which is pointless since I have already purchased the book.
• The book has a “self-published” feel to it; it would benefit from proofreaders and editors. For example, page 41 lists 4 key roles within a BPM Center of Excellence, and goes on to describe two of those roles. It doesn't describe the other two, and it feels as though the author intended to describe them but forgot those paragraphs. There are other areas where it seems as though the author was writing, got distracted, and then came back later to continue working. Hopefully a second edition will pass through a “read aloud” check before publication.

Exactly what I wanted with lots of detail

I just finished reading the Ultimate Guide to Business Process Management. It's a no nonsense, straightforward book and I would agree with others that it's well written and full of detail.
Setting up BPM capability can be difficult and I liked this book because it literally gives you the entire blueprint on how to implement BPM from scratch - and it assumes you have no prior knowledge either. It also provides a short history of BPM and comes with a dictionary and practice exam at the back. One thing the author talks about is the use of BPM in larger organizations like Toyota and General Electric. Everyone associates these organizations with TPS and Six Sigma, respectively. However, the author points out that both these organizations were successful because they had a solid BPM foundation in the first place. I also agree with this argument, including his view that BPM should be a business-led initiative, not an IT one.
If you're a beginner, this book will help you understand BPM *fast*. If you're an expert, this book makes an excellent reference guide to keep handy when running BPM projects. Definitely a good investment in my opinion.

Brief, concise, clear for both novices and experienced.

I recommend you read "The Ultimate Guide to BPM..." if you are taking a overview of foundations concepts of this practice as governance, maturity, career development model etc. It also aims to clear misunderstand concepts as: diagrams/models; process reengineering; center of excellence; business architecture, systems architecture, and so on... I read it in two days as it is not large but as a consultant in business process architecture I found value with this synthetized, clear and precise approach.. I will use it as a reference must-read book for the members of the process consultancy staff..

Perfect quick reference

The authors did a great job of compiling practical information for physicians in training. Passages are readable, understandable, and relevant. It's also succinct so that you can reference or read it when you only have a few minutes to spare. I love to read it in the bathroom!

This book has some valuable information. It is too bad that it is hidden in sentences that should have been proofread and edited. I had to reread sentences several times to try and figure out what the intention was. Once this is edited, I think it will be a helpful book.

Remarkable book. I struggle with social anxiety which has hindered my ability to talk to people over the course of my life. Moreover, this book is very helpful for me in my communication skills, and not hard to read at all. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who struggles with these issues.
