Report Writing for Criminal Justice Professionals, by Larry S. Miller, John T. Whitehead

The criminal justice process is dependent on accurate documentation. Criminal justice professionals can spend 50-75% of their time writing administrative and research reports. Report Writing for Criminal Justice Professionals, Fifth Edition provides practical guidance--with specific writing samples and guidelines--for providing strong reports. Much of the legal process depends on careful documentation and the crucial information that lies within, but most law enforcement, security, corrections, and probation and parole officers have not had adequate training in how to provide well-written, accurate, brief, and complete reports. Report Writing for Criminal Justice Professionals covers everything officers need to learn--from basic English grammar to the difficult but often-ignored problem of creating documentation that will hold up in court. This new edition is updated to include timely information, including extensive coverage of digital reporting, updates on legal issues and privacy rights, and expanded coverage of forensics and scientific reporting.

awful, so bad its funny at times
By john grant
This is a basic English book, with a number of fill it out forms borrowed from CJ agencies. The authors show a complete lack of experience in actual CJ work, no doubt they have never been so employed. Some of their Courtroom tips are so laughable, I had to share the laughs with my class. Clearly, this is not going to help someone looking for tips with writing in CJ. Save your money.

Kindle edition. No page numbers!
By Matt Service
This book is the text book at my university for a criminal justice report writing class. We jump all over in the book, and have to go to a specific page. Unfortunately, the kindle edition does not include page numbers. There is no quick and easy way to jump to where the rest of the class is. I looked it up, and page numbers are something the publisher needs to add. This is not a simple option on my e-reader to turn on. I use kindle texts for all my classes, and all the others have page numbers for easy scrolling to the appropriate place.

80 Lessons Learned: On the Road from $80,000 to $80,000,000, by Mr. Thomas Beyer

Having started in earnest in 1997 in real estate with a single rental pooled condo, then growing to over $100M in assets with over 1000 tenants, then surviving and thriving through a brutal worldwide recession, one has some battle scars. Real estate is not only up up up but also down down down for a while and to attract over $40M in investor capital from 600+ investors without losing a cent one has to get a few things right. This book is about a few of the critical lessons learned - not only in real estate but also in life as a father and husband, in an IT career with a multinational corporation and a start-up software firm but also in a failed wireless and restaurant venture. Here's what two other mentors of Thomas Beyer and best selling authors, Don R Campbell and Greg Habstritt, have to say about the book: There is a hard and fast rule in life, business and personal relationships, a rule that governs my choices. This simple yet very effective rule helps me stay focused on what works and allows me to propel myself forward in all aspects of life, while at the same time keeping me away from unwanted and frankly dangerous distractions. Most importantly, it helps me choose who to listen to and whose advice to take. I call this rule “The Final 30 Feet Rule.” The Final 30 Feet Rule states: Never take advice from someone who has not already successfully accomplished what you want to be successful at. For a comedian, it means do not listen to anyone who hasn’t walked that final 30 feet from behind the curtain to standing alone in front of an audience. For investors or business owners, it means the only people worth listening to are those who have created business or investing success that far surpasses yours. Who Is Your Trail Guide? By following this rule, you quickly eliminate most of the authors, advice givers or coaches because so many of them are theorists, with limited success in business. If I am on a dangerous and unfamiliar trail, I don’t want a guide who just has an idea about the trail, I want a guide who knows the trail like the back of their hand. They’ve been on the trail many times and they know the twists, turns and dangerous spots. Why is this important for you to understand as you consider this book? Simply, the author of this book, Thomas Beyer, is on my very small list of people who fit this description. I continually learn from him. To name just a few of the lessons included in this book: • Don’t Confuse Getting Things Done with Doing Them Yourself • The Phases of “Cleaning Up Your Life Messes” • The Anatomy of Uncomfortable Change • Asking Questions Separates You from the Crowd • How to Choose a Partner • Green Money vs. Red & Blue Money When I look for insights into my business or investments I make sure that I speak with Thomas as part of my diligence. He is successful in business, in personal relationships and in real estate investing and in this book he shares 80 tips that will help propel you forward—as many of them have done along my journey. Pick up the book, listen to someone who has already cleared the path forward with his own hard work and your journey will become much clearer. Don R. Campbell Investor, Bestselling Author & Philanthropist www.DonRCampbell.com =============== Having known Thomas and watched his investing closely for more than 7 years, I've had the pleasure of seeing him emerge as one of the most pragmatic, thoughtful and strategic investors in Canada. He's never afraid of making a tough decision, admitting a mistake, or helping a new investor learn the ropes. Not only is Thomas a role model for so many investors, he's both a mentor and a friend to me, and I'm thrilled to see him finally share his wisdom and insight with this book. It's a rare exception of a truly successful professional sharing the secrets of success not just in business and investing, but in life as well. Greg Habstritt, Best Selling Author, The RRSP Secret Founder, SimpleWealth Inc.

About the Author
Thomas Beyer arrived in Canada in 1986 with less than $1,000 in his jeans to pursue his MBA at the University of Alberta. Building multiple businesses—including one with more than $100 million in assets today—was not just far from his mind, it had never even occurred to him then. Working his way through various software engineering and technology marketing careers he left IBM in 1997 to grow a software and consulting firm with a partner in California. He eventually arrived at real estate investing, in parallel to his software start-up career in earnest in 2000, after 10 years of saying, “Gee, I should really do something in real estate.” He started with a single rental pooled condo for $80,000, then grew the initial successes with his own money, and later investor & operating partners into an investment group with more than $100 million in assets with around 1,000 suites, and an associated property management company managing over 1,500 units. The author now lives with his wife in Vancouver, BC, Canada but travels frequently to Alberta to inspect the group’s holdings, to visit their two adult children in Edmonton and to smell the clean, conservative, low tax non-unionized air.

Good lessons
By Victor W. Christianson
I enjoyed this. Author is a real real estate investor, unlike authors of so many get rich in real estate books, so he's got real life experiences to share. He shares some terrific observations, such as red vs blue vs green money, how cash flow is more or less a myth, how real estate illiquidity almost forces you to increase your net worth. Worth the time to read.

Information technology (IT) and broadband are major drivers of research, innovation, economic growth and social change. The 2008 edition of the OECD Information Technology Outlook analyses recent developments in the IT goods and services industries, and suggests that the outlook is for continued long-term growth, constrained by the currently very uncertain macroeconomic environment in OECD countries but with somewhat higher growth possible elsewhere.

This edition analyses the impact of high-speed broadband on the economy, and areas of future impacts. The dynamic growth of digital-content-based creative industries is outlined, covering user-created content; online computer and video games; film, video and music; and online advertising.Recent trends in OECD ICT policies are analysed to assess whether they are rising to these new challenges. Highly prioritised policy areas include investing in ICT R&D and innovation, improving government online activities, spreading broadband, increasing the use of ICTs, raising ICT skills and employment, and supporting digital content development.

“I picked up a copy of JavaScript by Example over the weekend and wanted to thank you for putting out a book that makes JavaScript easy to understand. I’ve been a developer for several years now and JS has always been the “monster under the bed,” so to speak. Your book has answered a lot of questions I’ve had about the inner workings of JS but was afraid to ask. Now all I need is a book that covers Ajax and Coldfusion. Thanks again for putting together an outstanding book.”

–Chris Gomez, Web services manager, Zunch Worldwide, Inc.

“I have been reading your UNIX Shells by Example book, and I must say, it is brilliant. Most other books do not cover all the shells, and when you have to constantly work in an organization that uses tcsh, bash, and korn, it can become very difficult. However, your book has been indispensable to me in learning the various shells and the differences between them…so I thought I’d email you, just to let you know what a great job you have done!”

–Farogh-Ahmed Usmani, B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc., DIC, project consultant (Billing Solutions), Comverse

“I have been learning Perl for about two months now; I have a little shell scripting experience but that is it. I first started with Learning Perl by O’Reilly. Good book but lacking on the examples. I then went to Programming Perl by Larry Wall, a great book for intermediate to advanced, didn’t help me much beginning Perl. I then picked up Perl by Example, Third Edition–this book is a superb, well-written programming book. I have read many computer books and this definitely ranks in the top two, in my opinion. The examples are excellent. The author shows you the code, the output of each line, and then explains each line in every example.”

–Dan Patterson, software engineer, GuideWorks, LLC

“Ellie Quigley has written an outstanding introduction to Perl, which I used to learn the language from scratch. All one has to do is work through her examples, putz around with them, and before long, you’re relatively proficient at using the language. Even though I’ve graduated to using Programming Perl by Wall et al., I still find Quigley’s book a most useful reference.”

–Casey Machula, support systems analyst, Northern Arizona University, College of Health and Human Services

“When I look at my bookshelf, I see eleven books on Perl programming. Perl by Example, Third Edition, isn’t on the shelf; it sits on my desk, where I use it almost daily. When I bought my copy I had not programmed in several years and my programming was mostly in COBOL so I was a rank beginner at Perl. I had at that time purchased several popular books on Perl but nothing that really put it together for me. I am still no pro, but my book has many dog-eared pages and each one is a lesson I have learned and will certainly remember. “I still think it is the best Perl book on the market for anyone from a beginner to a seasoned programmer using Perl almost daily.”

–Bill Maples, network design tools and automations analyst, Fidelity National Information Services

“We are rewriting our intro to OS scripting course and selected your text for the course. It’s an exceptional book. The last time we considered it was a few years ago (second edition). The debugging and system administrator chapters at the end nailed it for us.”

–Jim Leone, Ph.D., professor and chair, Information Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology

“Quigley’s book acknowledges a major usage of PHP. To write some kind of front end user interface program that hooks to a back end MySQL database. Both are free and open source, and the combination has proved popular. Especially where the front end involves making an HTML web page with embedded PHP commands. “Not every example involves both PHP and MySQL. Though all examples have PHP. Many demonstrate how to use PHP inside an HTML file. Like writing user-defined functions, or nesting functions. Or making or using function libraries. The functions are a key idea in PHP, that take you beyond the elementary syntax. Functions also let you gainfully use code by other PHP programmers. Important if you are part of a coding group that has to divide up the programming effort in some manner.”

From the Publisher
This tutorial/reference is the ideal guide for UNIX professionals who want to (or must) learn Perl as quickly as possible. Perl (Practical Extraction and Report Language) -- a public domain interpreted language used for manipulating text, files, and processes -- combines the best features of many of the UNIX utilities, including grep, awk, sed, tr, shells, and the C programming language. Due to its unique features, Perl has gained popularity recently, and is quickly becoming the preferred programming language of systems administrators.

Acknowledgments

I would like to send a special appreciation to Mark Houser, a system administration instructor for Remedy Corporation. Mark, with an MS in computer science, enjoys "extending his systems beyond the ordinary" with tools like Perl. He has always been there to answer questions, and he donated his taintperl database application in Appendix B. Mark's email address is mark.houser@EBay.Sun.COM.
I also owe a great deal to Deac Lancaster, a true scholar, co-worker, and good friend. While working for Sun Education, Deac spent many an evening after a long teaching day to guide me patiently through the workings of sockets, message queues, and semaphores. He loaned me his demo C programs, and together we re-wrote them in Perl for this book. Deac is now teaching at Remedy Corporation. Thanks, Deac! John Nouveaux, from Nouveaux Consulting, Santa Rosa, California, has also contributed a number of his Perl programs for the Appendix B in this book. John, an expert network programmer and system administrator, is a consultant and a dynamic teacher, specializing in connectivity issues using tcp/ip and the Internet.
Thanks also to Steve Hanson for his system administration work and to George Williams for compiling the CD-ROM and setting up the Web server.
Richard Evans, from Sun Microsystems, volunteered his time to test the examples in this book and offered helpful suggestions on how to improve them. Thank you, Richard.
Of course, appreciation to my editors, Mark Taub and Patti Guerrieri, for teaching me about the book business and patiently awaiting overdue chapters and correction pages. And to Roberta Harvey, from RAH Consulting, for her technical review and valuable criticism.
Thanks to Perl pioneers Larry Wall and Randal L. Schwartz, authors of the following books: Learning Perl by Randal L. Schwartz and Perl Programming by Larry Wall and Randal L. Schwartz.
And last, but not least, a huge thanks to all of my students out there who helped me learn Perl and kept it fun.

Preface

A picture is worth a thousand words, and so is a good example. Perl by Example is organized to teach you Perl from scratch with examples of complete succinct programs. Each line of a script sample is numbered, and important lines are highlighted. The output of the program is then displayed with numbers corresponding to the script numbers. Following the output is a separate explanation for each of the numbered lines. The examples are small and to the point for the topic at hand. Since the backbone of this book was used as a student guide to Perl, the topics are modularized. Each module builds on the previous one with a minimum of forward referencing and a logical progression from one topic to the next.
Perl by Example is not just a beginner's guide, but a complete guide to Perl. It covers many aspects of what Perl can do, from regular expression handling, to formatting reports, to interprocess communication. It will teach you about Perl and, in the process, a lot about UNIX. Although some UNIX knowledge will greatly accelerate your learning path, it is not assumed that you are a guru. Anyone reading, writing, or just maintaining Perl programs can greatly profit from this text. Topics such as networking, system calls, IPC, and CGI are designed to save the time it takes to figure out how the functions work, what libraries are needed, and the correct syntax, etc. Now, in this second edition, Perl5 objects and references have been added, and since Perl is the standard for writing CGI scripts for the Internet, there is a chapter to get you started writing your own dynamic Web pages.
Perl has a rich variety of functions for handling strings, arrays, the system interface, networking, and more. In order to understand how these functions work, background information concerning the how's, why's, and what for's is provided before demonstrating sample programs that function. This eliminates constantly wading through manual pages and other UNIX books to understand what is going on, what the arguments mean, and what the function actually does.
The Appendices contain a complete list of functions and definitions, command line switches, debugging options, special variables, Perl translators and sample scripts, including a fully functional, annotated Perl program using taintperl and interfacing with a database application.
I have been teaching now for the past 30 years and am committed to understanding how people learn. Having taught Perl now for over a year, I find that many new Perlers get frustrated when trying to teach themselves how to program in Perl. I, too, experienced frustration when first tackling Perl. So I wrote a book to help myself learn and to help my students, and now to help you. In my book you will not only learn Perl, you will also save yourself a great deal of time.

This is an excellent Perl book for beginners
By Patrick K. Birkmeyer
This is a very complete book if you want to learn and start to implement Perl. While Perl is not the be all/end all language, it is very much fun to use, especially in the UNIX world where you find the limitations of all the various shells limiting. Perl can get you going, and you can continue to learn more and more (such as object-oriented Perl) as you grow and evolve.

But this book is really good for beginners. While the examples are simple (as they SHOULD BE in a learning environment) each example line is explained in great gory detail. None of these "Hey, look at what I can distract you with while trying to teach you this simple example" or some authors involved and crazy "Case Study"; these examples are easy to assimilate. It is up to the reader to put the concepts together to make a coherant program (and Perl is a very forgiving language, making it great for beginning programmers).

When I was teaching Perl for collegiate newbies, this was my book of choice. The students would actually visualize some program, and this book would show them how the pieces worked. So the students just put them together and away they went. A lot of other Perl books fall very short in this aspect. Of the dozens of Perl books I own, this is one to read if you want to start with Perl.

One fo the better books I have run across on Perl.
By WBM
Good straight forward examples... most show the input, the code and the output produced by the code. You need only understand the logic of programming... the book fills in the rest you need to know. I have six or seven books on Perl but always reach for this or The Little Black Book for syntax and examples. Invest in a good editor designed for Perl programming like OptiPerl [with syntax checking and debugger] and you will be well on your way!

Good book for learning Perl
By Jericho Hasselbush
This book was required for an online course on Perl programming and so far I have to say that it has been pretty easy to read and follow. It has many clear examples and exercises. Not to mention, the book is HUGE and covers a large range of topics. If you are going to learn Perl, this book is a great one to pick up.
